How much does forklift training cost?
Short answer: this is what forklift training costs
The cost of forklift operator training depends on course format, provider and region - training centres publish their prices on their website or provide them on request. Belgium has no official forklift licence: anyone operating a forklift must have received adequate training (Code, Art. IV.3-7). One-day courses for people with prior experience are generally cheaper than multi-day standard courses for beginners. In-house training for larger groups can be cheaper depending on the number of participants.
Prices: on request from the training provider; they vary by provider and region.
Costs by course format
| Course format | Price | Target group |
|---|---|---|
| One-day course (1 day) | on request | Experienced operators, refreshers |
| Standard course (several sessions) | on request | Beginners without prior experience |
| Intensive course (incl. test) | on request | Beginners, higher service level |
| In-house training (group) | on request | Employers with several candidates |
| Supplementary training for another forklift type | on request | Trained operators, use of special forklifts |
Check for each quote whether the price includes or excludes VAT. Actual prices vary by region and provider.
What is included in the price?
Not every course price includes the same services. Check the following points before booking:
Usually included:
- Theoretical and practical training in line with applicable Belgian safety rules
- Test (theory + practice) by the training provider
- Issue of the certificate after passing the test
- Course materials (learning materials, operating instructions)
Often not included - to be clarified separately:
- Test retake if failed
- Laminated card in credit card format (surcharge)
- Health assessment by the occupational physician (for a safety function, via the employer's external prevention service)
- Travel and accommodation with supra-regional providers
Practical tip: Cheap offers often advertise a low entry price and charge the exam fee and materials separately. Always compare on the basis of the total price (including all additional costs).
Cost factors: what influences the price
Region and location In urban areas (Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent), courses tend to be more expensive than in rural areas. Transport and rent for the practice area are reflected in the course price.
Type of provider Commercial training providers and sector or regional training centres each price their courses in their own way. Some manufacturers and dealers offer brand-specific courses that also cover machine-specific features.
Group size The more participants, the lower the price per person - especially for in-house training. For companies with several employees who need training, a group almost always pays off.
Prior experience Anyone with demonstrable experience of industrial trucks may in some cases be referred to the one-day course - with a correspondingly lower course fee.
Course date and availability Short-notice bookings at peak times can be more expensive. Those who can book flexibly are more likely to find cheaper dates.
Paying privately or via the employer
Costs borne by the employer In most cases, the employer covers the course costs if the training is required for the job. This also makes sense from a liability point of view: without proven training, the employee may not operate the forklift.
Costs borne by private individuals Anyone taking forklift training on their own initiative may be able to draw on the following support:
- Support from the public employment service: VDAB lists free forklift training courses recognised by VDAB for jobseekers. In Wallonia, Brussels and East Belgium, ask Forem, Actiris or ADG about their offer and the conditions.
- Training leave: Belgium has paid training leave schemes for employees; the conditions differ by region. Check in advance whether forklift training qualifies.
Avoiding hidden costs
Test retake Anyone who does not pass the theory or practical test at the first attempt often pays again for the retake - the price depends on the provider.
Medical examination If, according to the employer's risk analysis, operating a forklift is a safety function, a prior health assessment by the occupational physician is required. It takes place via the employer's external service for prevention and protection at work and during working time. It is not included in the course price.
Supplementary training by equipment type Anyone who, after basic training, is deployed on a different type of forklift (e.g. switching from a counterbalance forklift to a reach truck) is advised to take type-specific supplementary training - the price depends on the provider.
FAQs on forklift training costs
Where can I find the current price of forklift training?
From the training provider itself: most training centres publish prices and dates on their website or provide them on request. Always compare the total price, including the test, certificate and any retake. One-day courses for experienced operators are generally cheaper.
Can I complete forklift training in one day and what does it cost?
Yes, one-day courses exist - but they are designed for people with demonstrable prior experience. The price depends on the provider. Not every provider accepts participants without experience for one-day courses. If in doubt, check in advance whether a one-day course suits your level of experience.
Does the employer cover the costs?
Usually yes, if the training is required for the current or intended job. Under the Belgian well-being at work legislation (Act of 4 August 1996 and the Code on Well-being at Work), the employer must ensure adequate training and deploy only qualified persons - covering the costs is therefore also a way of managing liability.
Is there support from the public employment service?
VDAB lists free forklift training courses recognised by VDAB for jobseekers. In Wallonia, Brussels and East Belgium, ask Forem, Actiris or ADG. Ask your job counsellor about the conditions in advance.
What does forklift training cost as a private individual - i.e. without an employer?
The course price still depends on the format and the provider. Without employer funding, it is worth checking whether support from the public employment service or training leave is an option. Anyone who can use neither bears the costs themselves.
