Articulating boom lift rental - from 10 to over 48 metres

When obstacles have to be bridged, hard-to-reach areas accessed or working heights above 20 metres are required, the articulating boom lift is the machine of choice. Luibl Rental & Sales rents articulating boom lifts with working heights from 10 to over 48 metres - available with electric, diesel and hybrid drive, delivered by our own low-loader throughout Belgium. On site you will also hear the same machine called a knuckle boom, articulated lift or articulated telescopic boom - they all mean the aerial work platform with an articulated boom that this page is about.

What is an articulating boom lift?

An articulating boom lift combines two principles: the jointed articulated boom and a telescopic boom for additional reach. The result is the so-called up-and-over effect: the basket is first raised vertically, then swung over an obstacle and finally extended telescopically - positioned precisely at the target point. This makes the articulating boom lift the first choice for pipework, building projections, industrial racking or structures that telescopic boom lifts or scissor lifts cannot get past. This articulated boom is also the reason for the name knuckle boom - at Luibl, the rental of articulating boom lifts is one of the most requested areas of powered access.

Articulating boom lift vs. telescopic boom lift: what is the difference?

Telescopic boom lifts work with a straight boom and are ideal for long, straight reach on open ground. Articulating boom lifts are the right choice as soon as obstacles are in the way or the work area has to be approached with a lateral offset. They can reach the same work point from different angles - a clear advantage for facade work or in tight industrial halls. For purely vertical work on level ground, scissor lifts are often the more cost-efficient alternative.

Which articulating boom lift fits? Four questions to guide your choice

Within this design, four parameters determine the right machine:

  1. How high and how far to the side? With this design, outreach often matters more than working height alone - it determines how far from the set-up position you can work without moving the machine. More weight in the basket reduces the permissible outreach.

  2. Indoors or outdoors? For halls, production areas and noise-sensitive environments, the electric articulating boom lift is the choice - no local emissions and low noise. Outdoors and on unpaved ground, the diesel version with four-wheel drive takes over.

  3. Do conditions change during the project? Then the hybrid articulating boom lift combines both: diesel for travelling on rough ground, electric for emission-free work in the hall.

  4. Do you need the articulated boom at all? If the work point can be reached freely from below, a scissor lift is usually the more cost-efficient solution. If only straight reach at great height counts, the telescopic boom lift is the faster machine.

Machines in this class weigh up to 21 tonnes. So check access, space for unloading and the permissible point load at the set-up location in advance - this prevents the most common cause of delays on site.

Our rental fleet: electric, diesel and hybrid up to 48 m

Luibl Rental relies on machines from Genie, JLG, Manitou, Magni and Niftylift. The rental fleet covers working heights from 10 to 48.15 metres and basket loads from 200 to 450 kg.

Electric articulating boom lifts for indoor applications

Electric platforms work without local emissions and with low noise - ideal for factories, logistics centres or public buildings. Non-marking tyres protect sensitive floors. Typical models: Manitou 120 AETJ-C 3D (11.95 m), Manitou 200 ATJ e (20.00 m), Genie Z40/23 N RJ (14.32 m).

Diesel articulating boom lifts for difficult terrain

Diesel models with 4x4 all-wheel drive and oscillating axle handle gradients of up to 45 % and difficult ground. Typical models: Manitou 160 ATJ (16.02 m), Genie ZX-135/70 (43.15 m), JLG 1500AJP (48.15 m, 450 kg basket load).

Hybrid articulating boom lifts for flexible use

Hybrid models combine electric and diesel drive - usable indoors and outdoors without conversion. Typical models: Niftylift HR 21 Hybrid (20.80 m), Niftylift HR 28 Hybrid (28.00 m), Genie Z60/37FE (20.16 m).

Articulating boom lifts compared: height, outreach and basket load

Working height alone says little about an articulating boom lift. What matters is the interplay of working height, outreach and permissible basket load. The table shows a selection from our rental fleet - from the compact hall machine to the largest articulating boom lift in our fleet.

How to read the values:

  • Working height is the platform height plus 2 metres - the height at which a person standing in the basket works.
  • Outreach is the maximum horizontal reach according to the manufacturer. It is usually not achieved at full height; what counts for your work point is the reach diagram of the specific model.
  • Basket load covers everything in the basket: people, tools and material combined.

Within the same height class, machines differ significantly. At around 20 metres of working height, outreach ranges from 11.15 m (Genie Z60/37FE) to 13.00 m (Niftylift HR 21 Hybrid). If you need to take more than 250 kg up, you will end up with the Genie Z45FE (300 kg), the Niftylift HR 28 Hybrid (280 kg) or the JLG 1500AJP (450 kg).

Applications: where the articulating boom lift shows its strengths

The articulating boom lift always has the edge when the machine cannot stand directly below the work point. Typical scenarios:

Facade and building envelope

Canopies, balconies, bay windows or planting in front of the building prevent a platform from driving straight up to the facade. The articulated boom passes over these obstacles and brings the basket close to the wall - for facade installation, window connections, sealing, cleaning or renovation. Where scaffolding does not pay off for short work phases, the articulating boom lift is often the faster and more economical solution.

Plant engineering and industry

Pipe bridges, cable trays, ventilation ducts and machines stand close together in production halls. What counts here is that the basket can be guided over and between plant components. Electric and hybrid models work without local emissions, and non-marking tyres protect the hall floor - important for maintenance, conversion and installation during ongoing operations.

Steel construction, hall and stadium construction

When installing roof girders, grandstand structures or lighting and sound equipment, great working heights meet lateral offset. On unpaved sites, diesel models with four-wheel drive take over; on finished hall floors, the electric or hybrid version.

Maintenance and facility management

Inspection, cleaning and repair of roofs, gutters, lighting and building services often take place in courtyards or at narrow access points. This is where compact electric machines from 10.89 m working height play to their strengths.

Events and trade fairs

For setting up and dismantling rigging, lighting and stage technology in halls, quiet, emission-free electric models are the usual choice.

Application example: maintenance on a pipe bridge during ongoing operations

A typical industrial scenario shows how the selection works in practice. It is an example for deployment planning, not an individual customer case.

The starting situation: On a pipe bridge at a height of 14 metres, brackets and insulation need to be replaced. The pipe bridge runs over a traffic aisle, with plant components on the left and right. The machine can only be set up with a lateral offset of around seven metres. Two people work with hand tools, and the hall remains in operation.

The selection in four steps:

  1. Height: 14 m work point plus reserve - so the class from around 16 m working height comes into question.
  2. Outreach: A good seven metres of offset at 14 m height rules out the compact hall machines. Only the reach diagram shows whether a model can cover this distance at this height - the maximum outreach usually does not apply at full height.
  3. Basket load: Two people with tools need a basket load well above 200 kg.
  4. Environment: hall in operation - so electric or hybrid with non-marking tyres.

The result: An electric articulating boom lift in the 17 m class such as the Manitou 170 AETJ-L (16.90 m working height, 9.43 m outreach, 230 kg basket load) comes into question; with more reserve in height and offset, the Manitou 200 ATJ e (20.00 m, 11.57 m). If heavy components also have to go into the basket, the choice shifts to a model with a higher basket load. The Genie Z45FE does carry 300 kg, but with 6.94 m it does not reach far enough to the side - then the set-up position has to move closer to the pipe bridge or a larger machine is needed.

Agreed before delivery: access and clearance height, load-bearing capacity of the hall floor at the set-up location and the barrier around the work area. With this information you receive a quote that fits the task - not just the working height.

Delivery by our own low-loader - throughout Belgium

Luibl Rental has its own low-loader transport fleet. This means: no dependence on external hauliers, direct coordination of delivery date and set-up location, delivery to your site on the agreed date. Transporting articulating boom lifts weighing up to 21 tonnes requires specialised equipment - at Luibl this is standard. Whether short-term or long-term rental - delivery is available throughout Belgium.

Operation and qualification

For operating aerial work platforms, the required operator qualification is essential, in line with applicable Belgian safety rules and NBN EN standards. It is advisable for the operator to be familiarised, in theory and in practice, with the handling of the specific machine. All Luibl machines leave the depot after a periodic inspection by an external technical inspection body (EDTC/SECT) and come with complete technical documentation. On handover, we provide the operator briefing.

How much does it cost to rent an articulating boom lift?

Articulating boom lifts are technically more complex than purely vertical platforms - so the rental price varies more widely. These factors determine it:

  • Working height and outreach: From the 12 m electric machine for the hall to the 48 m diesel articulating boom lift for outdoor use there are several classes. Outreach often matters more than height alone.
  • Drive: electric for emission-free indoor work, diesel with four-wheel drive for rough terrain, hybrid for jobs that require both.
  • Rental period: daily, weekly and monthly rates are tiered; for longer projects, long-term rental with its own terms pays off.
  • Transport: Machines in this class weigh up to 21 tonnes and need specialised transport equipment. They are delivered by low-loader to your site with our own fleet, and transport is quoted separately from the machine rental.
  • Additional services: machinery breakdown insurance and on-site briefing are calculated separately.

Included are an inspected machine with a valid periodic inspection by an EDTC/SECT body, maintenance during the rental period and technical advice on selection. With details on working height, required outreach, ground conditions, rental period and site location, you receive an itemised quote.

FAQ: Renting an articulating boom lift

chevronDown

How much does an articulating boom lift cost per day?

The rental price depends on working height, drive type and rental period. Compact electric models are considerably cheaper than large diesel machines over 40 m. Request a tailored quote - we will give you specific daily and weekly prices.

Which articulating boom lift is suitable for indoor use?

For indoor work, electric models with non-marking tyres, low dead weight and low ground pressure are recommended - e.g. Manitou 120 AETJ-C 3D or Genie Z33/18.

What is the difference between an articulated boom lift and a telescopic boom lift?

Articulated boom lifts reach over obstacles (up-and-over), telescopic boom lifts offer greater straight reach. Articulating telescopic boom lifts combine both advantages.

How heavy is an articulating boom lift?

The machine weight varies: compact electric models weigh 3-5 tonnes, large diesel machines can reach 18-22 tonnes. Ground loading and the bearing capacity of the ground must be checked in advance.

How is an articulating boom lift delivered?

With our own fleet: delivered by low-loader to your site, throughout Belgium. Machines in this class weigh up to 21 tonnes and therefore require specialised transport equipment. Because we do not depend on external hauliers, we agree the delivery date and set-up location directly with you. Clarify access and unloading space in advance.

Is an articulating boom lift suitable for indoor use?

Yes, with electric drive. These models operate with zero local emissions and low noise, making them suitable for enclosed halls, production areas and noise-sensitive environments. Also look for non-marking tyres if the hall floor is sensitive, and check the permissible point load - machines in this class have a considerable dead weight.

What outreach does an articulating boom lift achieve?

With this design, outreach is often more important than working height alone - it determines how far from the set-up position you can work without moving the machine. How far it reaches in a specific case depends on the model and the basket load: with more weight in the basket, the permissible outreach decreases. Tell us the working point, set-up position and load, and we will select the right machine.

Is an articulating boom lift also called a knuckle boom lift?

Yes. Articulating boom lift, knuckle boom lift and articulating telescopic boom lift are common names for the same machine; in German-language documentation it is abbreviated as GTB. The name comes from the hinged knuckle boom, which distinguishes it from the purely linear telescopic boom lift.

What does the up-and-over effect mean?

This is the ability of an articulating boom lift to work over an obstacle. The knuckle boom first raises the basket vertically, then tilts it over the obstacle and extends the telescopic boom to the target point. This lets you reach work areas behind pipes, canopies or racking that remain inaccessible to rigid telescopic boom lifts and scissor lifts.

How much weight can go in the basket of an articulating boom lift?

In our rental fleet the permitted basket load ranges from 200 to 450 kg depending on the model. Most machines up to around 20 m working height are designed for 200 to 250 kg; the Genie Z45FE (300 kg), the Niftylift HR 28 Hybrid (280 kg) and the JLG 1500AJP (450 kg), for example, carry more. The basket load includes people, tools and materials together. How many people are permitted is shown on the rating plate on the basket. Tell us the weight that needs to go up - we will choose a model with sufficient reserve.

Which articulating boom lift has the greatest outreach?

The largest articulating boom lift in our rental fleet is the JLG 1500AJP with 48.15 m working height and 23.55 m outreach with a basket load of up to 450 kg. In the class around 28 m, the Magni DAB28RT (19.40 m) and the Niftylift HR 28 Hybrid (19.00 m) offer particularly long outreach. If the outreach of an articulating boom lift is not enough, we can advise you on telescopic boom lifts with up to 56.90 m working height.

What is the difference between working height and platform height?

Platform height is the height of the basket floor above the ground. For aerial work platforms, working height is by convention 2 metres higher - the height at which a person standing in the basket works. A machine with 20 m working height therefore raises the basket floor to around 18 m. Always compare quotes on the same figure, otherwise you may quickly find yourself two metres short on site.

Do I need a driving licence for an articulating boom lift?

No driving licence, but the required operator qualification in line with applicable Belgian safety rules. It shows that the operator has been trained in theory and practice.
