Telehandler rental - from fixed to roto to heavy-duty

Telehandlers - depending on the sector also called telescopic handlers or telescopic loaders - are among the most versatile machines on modern sites: they lift pallets to great heights, feed material into narrow openings and move loads sideways far beyond the chassis. A distinction is made between fixed machines and roto telehandlers, whose superstructure rotates 360 degrees. Which telehandler is the right choice for your project depends on three factors: lift height, load capacity and the required slewing radius.

Fixed, roto or heavy-duty: which telehandler fits?

The first step in choosing a machine is distinguishing between the three main designs. Each configuration is optimised for specific tasks - the wrong choice costs time and money.

Fixed telehandler - compact and site-proven

Fixed telehandlers are the most widely used machines in building construction and civil engineering. The boom extends straight out; loads are moved in line with the vehicle axis. Typical loads: 2.5 t to 10 t. Lift heights: 6 m to 18 m.

Typical applications:

  • Lifting pallets and building materials to intermediate floors (shell construction, building construction)
  • Supply and removal in roof and facade areas
  • Material transport on tight industrial and commercial sites
  • Indoor use with limited ceiling height

Luibl Rental offers fixed telehandlers from Manitou (MT series, ULM series), Merlo (P series) and Genie (GTH series) - from 2.5 t load capacity and from 6 m lift height.

Roto telehandler - 360-degree rotation for tight conditions

The roto telehandler rotates its superstructure a full 360 degrees. This enables working positions that fixed models cannot reach: placing material behind obstacles, serving several directions from one position, reducing the set-up area to a minimum.

Typical applications:

  • Steel construction: lifting in beams and trusses
  • Roofing and facade installation with lateral reach
  • Installation work in halls with several handover points
  • Special jobs requiring 360-degree rotation in confined spaces

Luibl Rental offers roto telehandlers from Manitou (MRT series), Merlo (Roto series) and Magni (RTH series) with lift heights from 16 m to 35 m and load capacities from 4 t to 7 t.

Heavy-duty telehandler - up to 33 t for industry and manufacturing

Heavy-duty telehandlers are designed for loads that exceed conventional models. With capacities from 10 t to 33 t, they are used in plant engineering, manufacturing and the energy sector - wherever a crane is not possible or not economically viable.

Luibl Rental offers heavy-duty telehandlers from Manitou (MHT series) and Merlo (P series heavy-duty) with a maximum load capacity of 33 t (Manitou MHT 12330).

Find the right telehandler in four questions

The designs differ less in appearance than in their application profile. These four questions reliably narrow down the choice:

  1. Do you lift straight ahead in the direction of travel? Then the fixed telehandler is the simpler and more economical machine - the most widely used design in building construction and civil engineering.

  2. Do you need to work in several directions from a fixed position? The roto telehandler rotates its superstructure a full 360 degrees. This pays off when material is placed behind obstacles or the set-up area is limited.

  3. How heavy is the load? Above the usual site classes, the heavy-duty telehandler takes over - industrial and plant construction, ports and handling, wherever a mobile crane would be technically possible but uneconomical.

  4. Do you work in enclosed halls? Then the electric telehandler is the choice: no local emissions and low noise, no exhaust extraction needed in the building.

Regardless of the design, the attachment determines the actual benefit - pallet forks, bucket, work basket, lifting hook or winch change the load chart and reach. So tell us the intended use and not just the preferred model.

Telehandler designs compared

The following overview summarises the four designs in the rental fleet. What always counts for the choice is lift height, load at the required outreach and the available space for set-up.

DesignLoad capacityLift heightRotates 360 degTypical use
Fixed2.5-10 t6-18 mnoShell construction, building construction, material supply on open ground
Roto4-8 t16-39 myesSteel construction, roof and facade installation, tight set-up areas
Heavy-duty10-33 t9-16 mnoPlant engineering, manufacturing, energy sector, crane alternative
Electricup to 2.5 tup to 6 mnoIndoor use, emission-free indoor areas, night work

The three key questions:

  1. How high does the load need to go? Up to 18 m a fixed telehandler is sufficient. Above that, there is no way around the roto.
  2. How heavy is the load - and at what outreach? The rated load capacity only applies with the boom retracted. At full reach, depending on the model, only a fraction of it remains; what always counts is the load chart of the specific machine.
  3. How much space is available for set-up? If the machine has to be repositioned for every handover point, the 360-degree superstructure of the roto saves more time than the extra cost.

If you cannot decide between two classes, tell us the lift height, weight, outreach and ground conditions - we will suggest the right machine.

Applications and sectors

Construction: building and turnkey construction, civil engineering, road construction - the telehandler handles supply, installation and horizontal transport in one machine.

Industry and manufacturing: plant engineering, machine installation, moving heavy tools - heavy-duty models up to 33 t where there is no room for a crane.

Event technology: stage construction, tent structures, temporary hall structures - roto telehandlers for tight event areas with several drop-off points.

Agriculture: silage work, harvest campaigns, barn construction - fixed telehandlers as seasonal reinforcement without tying up capital.

Energy sector: maintenance and installation work on wind turbines, photovoltaic systems and substations.

Attachments for telehandlers

A telehandler only becomes a universal machine with the right attachment. All attachments are delivered with the machine on request and are already matched to the respective machine type - the mounting and the load charts must match the machine, otherwise use is not permitted.

Pallet forks - the standard for material handling: pallets, big bags with spreader beam, formwork elements, insulation packs. Usually already fitted to the machine unless otherwise agreed.

Work basket (personnel basket) - turns the telehandler into an aerial work platform for installation, maintenance and inspection work. When using a personnel basket, applicable Belgian safety rules and NBN EN standards also apply; the machine must be approved for lifting people and equipped accordingly.

Lifting hook and jib - for lifting on a rope instead of on the forks: steel components, precast elements, ventilation and pipe elements. The jib extends reach over obstacles and in many cases replaces a crane.

Winch - for controlled lifting and lowering over greater distances, typical for roof and facade installation and in steel construction.

Bucket - light and heavy material buckets for bulk material, excavation and handling in recycling and agriculture.

Which attachments are available for which machine is shown in the overview of telehandler attachments. Attachments are calculated separately from the machine rate - so always include them in the description of the application when you send an enquiry.

Technical requirements and operator qualification

The following requirements apply to operating a telehandler:

Driving licence: for use on public roads, the required Belgian driving licence category. Operator qualification: the employer ensures the required operator qualification, in line with applicable Belgian safety rules and NBN EN standards. Use with personnel basket: when using a work basket, applicable Belgian safety rules and NBN EN standards also apply. Operating manual: every rented machine is supplied with an up-to-date operating manual and a handover report.

How much does it cost to rent a telehandler?

There is no universal price list for telehandler rental - design, class and rental duration vary too much. However, the calculation always follows the same parameters:

  • Design: Fixed telehandlers form the entry class. Rotating machines with a 360-degree slewing superstructure sit above them, and heavy-duty telehandlers with load capacities of more than 30 tonnes form the top end.
  • Lift height and load capacity: Within each design, the rate rises with lift height and load capacity. A 6 m machine and a 30 m machine are several classes apart.
  • Rental period: Daily, weekly and monthly rates are tiered. The longer the term, the lower the calculated daily rate; from several months onwards, long-term conditions apply.
  • Attachments: Work basket, lifting hook, bucket, pallet forks or winch are calculated separately and are one of the most common reasons why two quotes do not seem comparable at first glance.
  • Transport: Delivery and collection with our own low-loader fleet are listed separately and depend on the distance to your site, the transport weight and access to the site.

The rate includes a technically maintained machine with valid inspection, maintenance and periodic inspections during the rental period, and technical advice on machine selection. If you tell us the lift height, load capacity, required attachments, rental period and site location, you receive an itemised quote instead of a price range.

Rental terms at a glance

Minimum rental period: Billing is based on a daily, weekly or monthly rate; from several months onwards, long-term conditions apply.

Luibl Rental ensures a prompt response through its breakdown service. If a breakdown cannot be fixed technically, a replacement machine is provided to minimise project interruptions.

What is included in the rental price?

The rental price includes provision of the machine with all current inspection certificates, the breakdown service and regular maintenance during the rental period. Transport costs are calculated separately and shown transparently in the quote.

What load capacities are possible with heavy-duty telehandlers?

Heavy-duty telehandlers cover the range in which conventional site machines reach their limits - loads of more than 30 tonnes are the subject here. They are used in industrial and plant construction, for port and handling tasks and wherever a mobile crane would be technically possible but uneconomical. Which machine fits depends not only on the load but above all on the required lift height and the load centre.

Is there a price list for telehandler rental?

There is no universal price list, because design, performance class, attachments, rental period and transport route determine the rate. The factors are transparent, though: fixed telehandlers are the entry class, roto machines sit above them and heavy-duty machines are at the top. In every quote we list base rental, attachments and transport separately so that you can compare.

Which attachments can I rent with the telehandler?

Depending on the machine, attachments available include pallet forks, bucket, lifting hook, work basket and winch. Attachments are priced separately from the basic rental and are one of the most common reasons why two quotes do not seem comparable at first glance. Important: every attachment changes the load chart and reach - so tell us the intended application, not just the attachment you want.

When is a roto telehandler worthwhile compared with a fixed telehandler?

The roto telehandler rotates its upper carriage through a full 360 degrees. This pays off when work has to be carried out in several directions from one fixed position, when material is placed behind obstacles or when the set-up area is tight. If, on the other hand, lifting is straight ahead in the direction of travel, the fixed telehandler is the simpler and more economical machine.

What is the difference between a telehandler and a telescopic forklift?

None. Telehandler, telescopic forklift and telescopic handler all stand for the same machine: a vehicle with an extendable telescopic boom that not only lifts loads but also moves them forward beyond the chassis. Which term is used depends more on the industry and region than on the technology.

From what rental period is long-term rental worthwhile?

From a rental period of 4 weeks, we recommend monthly rental, as the daily rate falls significantly compared with day-by-day billing. For terms of 3 months or more, individual terms apply - contact us directly.

How is the machine transported to the site?

Luibl Rental has its own fleet of low-loaders and delivers all machines directly to your site, throughout Belgium and in other European countries. There is no dependence on external hauliers - delivery and collection take place on the agreed date, all from a single point of contact.
