Renting a truck-mounted or trailer-mounted platform: which suits your job?

Anyone who wants to rent an aerial work platform thinks first about working height and price. Yet one question is at least as decisive: how does the machine get to the site – and how quickly is it ready for use there? Truck-mounted platforms and trailer-mounted platforms solve the same basic problem in two fundamentally different ways. Which option is the better choice for your specific case depends on factors that are often overlooked in the advisory discussion.

This article explains both machine types in objective technical terms, names their real strengths – and shows when each solution makes sense.

Truck-mounted platform: mobility as a system

A truck-mounted platform is not an attachment – it is a fully integrated system of transport vehicle and aerial work platform. The decisive difference from a separately delivered scissor lift or the transport of an articulating boom lift is that the vehicle itself carries and positions the platform. As soon as the truck is parked, set-up time begins – and it often takes only a few minutes.

Technical classification

In the Luibl rental fleet, truck-mounted platforms are available in two classes:

  • Up to 3.5 t: can be driven with a car licence, from 20 m working height, small turning circle
  • Large machines up to 57 m working height: for facade work, tree care along main roads, municipal services; brands Ruthmann and Palfinger, all machines periodically inspected

Hydraulic outrigging is automatic. That means: no manual alignment, no levelling with wedges, no loss of time. Anyone working on three single-family houses in one street moves the truck, sets the outriggers, extends – done. The time advantage on moving sites is real and measurable.

Typical applications

  • Tree care and pruning along roads and paths
  • Maintenance and cleaning of street lighting and traffic signs
  • Facade painting and plastering across several buildings
  • Roof edge inspection and lightning protection work in business parks
  • Municipal services with changing locations

Trailer-mounted platform: the argument against dead weight

The trailer-mounted platform has a structural advantage over the truck-mounted platform: the towing vehicle stays free. Anyone who leaves the platform on a site in the morning and then organises material with a car or van has no idle time due to a tied-up truck.

Technical classification

Trailer-mounted platforms are towed with a car tow hitch. Their decisive parameter is not working height – it is weight. Typical machines range from under 750 kg (towable without an additional trailer licence) to approx. 3,500 kg. The low dead weight protects sensitive surfaces: driveways, lawns, paving slabs. Many models have an electric mover that allows precise manoeuvring in tight spaces without a towing vehicle.

Typical applications

  • Facade work on individual buildings with sensitive surroundings
  • Gutter cleaning and minor roofing metalwork
  • Maintenance work in courtyards and narrow access points
  • Trade businesses that also use their towing vehicle as a material transporter
  • Jobs on unpaved or sensitive ground (garden, green space, historic paving)

Practical example: painting company in a housing estate

A painting company is commissioned to paint seven single-family houses in a new housing estate within two weeks. All buildings are within a radius of 800 metres. The company drives every day with a van carrying paint, scaffolding material and tools.

Scenario A: truck-mounted platform

The truck is at the first house at 7 am. Set-up time: under 10 minutes. After completing the work, stowing, moving, setting up: approx. 15 minutes per change. Across seven buildings, this adds up to around 90 minutes of logistics. The van operates independently. The conclusion: high mobility, little time lost, clear separation of access at height and material transport.

Scenario B: trailer-mounted platform

The trailer-mounted platform is unhitched in the morning and stays at the building during the day. The van is free to transport material. Advantage: if a building is worked on over several days, there are no changeover costs. Disadvantage: with buildings changing daily, the platform has to be collected, transported and set down every morning – which takes time if no second driver is available.

The result:

With rapidly changing locations and sufficient crew, the truck comes out ahead. If a building is worked on over several days and the van is more important as a material transporter than the flexibility of the platform, the trailer-mounted platform scores.

Safety: what applies to both machine types

Whether you rent a truck-mounted platform or a trailer-mounted platform: both machines are subject to the same legal requirements. All rental machines from the Luibl fleet undergo the prescribed periodic inspection by an external technical inspection body (EDTC/SECT). Planning and use are also based on EN 280 (design requirements for mobile aerial work platforms).

For operators: people who operate aerial work platforms must be demonstrably instructed or trained, in line with applicable Belgian safety rules. The internationally recognised PAL Card (IPAF) is standard today for many clients and operators.

The most important operational safety points include:

  • PPE requirement: in the basket, wearing a fall-arrest harness and clipping on to the designated anchor point is mandatory - even for short jobs
  • Wind load: from force 6 (approx. 12 m/s), most platforms must be taken out of service; the manufacturer's operating manuals define the exact limits per model
  • Ground: check the load-bearing capacity of the ground before use, especially for trailer-mounted platforms on private property
  • Danger zones: work in the proximity zone of overhead power lines only with the prior written permission of the network operator (AREI/RGIE Book 3, 9.3.6.1); allow for the most unfavourable position of the conductors (sag, swing). The limit of this zone is further out for medium and high voltage

Which platform suits your job? We advise you.

The choice between a truck-mounted and a trailer-mounted platform is not just a question of budget – it is a question of logistics, ground, crew and project duration. Choose the wrong machine and you pay twice: once for the rental, once for the lost time. Luibl advises you specifically – not by price list, but by job profile. We find the right machine, coordinate delivery throughout Belgium and are there to answer your questions during the rental.
