Hybrid scissor lift rental - diesel for the journey, electric in the hall

A hybrid scissor lift solves a problem that comes up constantly in day-to-day projects: the machine has to cross unpaved ground to reach its work location and then work inside a closed hall where exhaust fumes and noise are not permitted. Renting two machines for this means paying for two transports and two rental items. The Luibl rental fleet includes four scissor lifts with switchable drive - working heights from 11.75 m to 27.20 m, load capacities from 363 kg to 1,000 kg. All machines are inspected before handover in line with applicable Belgian safety rules and NBN EN 280.

Two drive concepts sit behind the term:

  • Bi-energy: A diesel generator charges the battery and handles travel on rough ground; for lifting and driving indoors the machine switches to pure battery operation. The diesel engine stays off.

  • Hybrid: Diesel and electric drive are permanently combined; the control system selects the operating mode depending on load or by operator preselection. Typical of the heavy rough-terrain scissor lifts with four-wheel drive.

In practice both mean the same: one machine, two working environments, one transport.

The heavy-duty class: 27 m working height with 1,000 kg

The Holland Lift M250HYL25 Combistar 4WD is the only machine in the rental fleet that combines 27.20 m working height, 1,000 kg platform capacity and four-wheel drive with a switchable drive concept. The platform can be extended to 8.25 m - a basic requirement when facade elements, ventilation ducts or sandwich panels need to be handled in one lift without repositioning the machine. Typical applications: facade installation on multi-storey logistics halls, steel erection in plant construction, roofing work followed by interior fit-out.

The mid-range class: 12 m to 15 m for alternating use

The three bi-energy machines cover the range where most alternating projects fall - commercial construction, hall refurbishment, ventilation and sprinkler installation on sites that do not yet have a reliable mains connection.

  • PB S151-19EGI 4x4 - 15.00 m working height, 500 kg load capacity, platform extendable to 6.36 m, four-wheel drive. The strongest of the three when material has to go up on the platform.

  • Genie GS 4069DC - 14.12 m working height, 363 kg load capacity, compact footprint of 2.79 m x 1.60 m. Fits through site gates that are too narrow for the larger rough-terrain scissor lifts.

  • Genie GS 3369BE - 11.75 m working height, 454 kg load capacity, the same footprint as the GS 4069DC with a higher load capacity. The choice for two-person installation work with tools.

When a hybrid scissor lift pays off compared with two machines

The switching capability carries a rental surcharge compared with a purely electric scissor lift of the same working height. It pays off as soon as one of these four points applies:

  1. No reliable mains connection at the work location. On shell construction sites the site power is usually fully allocated. Anyone using an electric scissor lift without guaranteed overnight charging loses working time on day two. The diesel generator charges independently of the mains.

  2. The machine has to cross the terrain to reach its position. Topsoil, gravel, sloping site access roads: electric scissor lifts with non-marking tyres are not designed for this. The hybrid machines in the fleet have four-wheel drive.

  3. Indoor and outdoor work alternate over the course of the project. Facade first, interior fit-out afterwards - typical in commercial and logistics construction. Changing machines means two transports, two briefings and a gap in the construction schedule.

  4. Indoor emission requirements. In food businesses, clean rooms and operating logistics facilities, diesel operation is ruled out. Pure battery operation meets the requirements for working with no local emissions, without losing the terrain capability needed to get there.

If none of these points applies, the pure electric scissor lift or the diesel scissor lift is the more economical choice.

How switching works: what site managers should know in advance

Switch when stationary, not under load. The operating mode is changed with the machine stationary via the ground controls or - depending on the model - via the platform controls. Switching during lifting is not provided for by design. For planning this means: the operating mode is chosen before set-up, not during work.

Battery capacity determines indoor operating time. In pure electric mode the operating time is limited by the battery. As a planning figure, allow one working day on a full charge with a normal lifting and driving profile. For multi-shift indoor work, either plan a charging break or use the generator outside the emission-sensitive area to recharge.

Check the tyre choice. Terrain capability and non-marking properties are two separate requirements. If the machine continues working on a coated hall floor after outdoor use, the tyres must be clarified explicitly with the enquiry - please state this in your enquiry.

Weight and wheel load. Switchable machines carry both a generator and a battery pack. Their total weight is higher than that of a purely electric scissor lift of the same working height. For work on slabs in underground car parks or upper floors, the wheel load of the specific model is decisive, not the total weight - we provide the data sheets before the rental.

Outriggers and ground slope. The rough-terrain models level themselves using hydraulic outriggers. The permitted ground slope during operation is model-specific and documented in the data sheet; the tilt sensor cuts out the lifting function if it is exceeded.

Inspections, safety and logistics

Every scissor lift in the Luibl rental fleet undergoes periodic inspection by an external technical inspection body (EDTC/SECT) and is checked by our workshop staff before every delivery. Standard equipment includes a tilt alarm, overload protection, a mechanical emergency lowering system and emergency lowering from the ground on both sides. For operation, the following still applies: the operator must have received instruction under the Code on Well-being at Work, Book IV (work equipment); personal fall protection equipment is worn on the platform in line with the rules for work at height under the Code on Well-being at Work. On handover we provide the operator briefing. With switchable operation two further points apply: * The briefing must cover both operating modes - in practice, operating errors occur mainly when switching. * If the diesel generator is run in enclosed spaces, the ventilation requirements under applicable Belgian safety rules apply. That is exactly what electric operation is meant to avoid; the user's operating instructions should settle this clearly. Transport is handled by our own low-loader fleet, with delivery throughout Belgium and to the other Luibl markets: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Czechia, Italy, Hungary, Luxembourg. For long-term rentals we offer combined packages with periodic inspection and maintenance during the rental period.

Do you know which working height and which operating mode you need? Send us the working height, load capacity, work location, rental duration and - if relevant - the required tyres. We will get back to you promptly with a quote and availability.

Renting a hybrid scissor lift

chevronDown

What is the difference between hybrid and bi-energy scissor lifts?

On a bi-energy scissor lift, a diesel generator charges the battery and handles travel on rough terrain; indoors, the machine switches to pure battery operation and the diesel engine stays off. With a hybrid drive, both drives are permanently combined and the control system selects the operating mode depending on load or the operator's preselection. In everyday rental practice the effect is the same: one machine for outdoor terrain and indoor use.

Can I use a hybrid scissor lift in an enclosed hall?

In purely electric mode, yes - that is what the switchover function is for. If the diesel engine is run in enclosed spaces, ventilation requirements apply in line with applicable Belgian safety rules. The operating instructions of the user company should clearly specify in which areas only electric operation is permitted.

How long does the battery last indoors?

As a planning figure, allow one working day on a full charge with a normal lifting and travel profile. The actual runtime depends on lifting cycles, travel distances and payload. For multi-shift operation, either plan a charging break or recharge via the generator outside the emission-sensitive area.

Which working heights are available for hybrid scissor lifts?

The rental fleet covers working heights of 11.75 m to 27.20 m, with load capacities from 363 kg to 1,000 kg. The largest machine, a Holland Lift M250HYL25 Combistar 4WD, combines 27.20 m working height with 1,000 kg load capacity and a platform extendable to 8.25 m.

Can I switch between diesel and electric during work?

The operating mode is changed with the machine stationary, via the ground control or - depending on the model - the platform control. Switching during lifting is not provided for by design. The operating mode is therefore selected before set-up.

Is a hybrid scissor lift more expensive than an electric scissor lift?

The rental price is higher than that of a purely electric scissor lift with the same working height. It pays off as soon as a machine change can be avoided: a second transport, a second briefing and the gap in the construction schedule usually cost more in total than the surcharge. For purely indoor use, the electric scissor lift is the cheaper choice.
